We have recently completed comissioning a new Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for our primary datacenter in the Rialto building in Melbourne. This installation is part of our upgrade to the datacenter we took over from the previous tenants and brings the electrical component of the datacenter in line with our standards.
The two new UPS units are manufactured and maintained by premium UPS provider Thycon. We've taken the upgrade as an opportunity to separate the units from the datacenter itself by locating them in an adjacent room. This enables us to separate the cooling and maintenance of the facilities which reduces risk. It also allows us to centralise the electricals with the UPS, batteries and master distribution boards all located in a dedicated room. The room is equipped with a separate and dedicated cooling system, is environmentally moitored, and is located within the building core - ideal for housing such heavy equipment. The installation was not an insignificant project for Securiton as we had to manage a variety or specialist contractors, comply with particular Rialto building standards, manage risks, and responsibly manage the impact on our datacenter clients. It involved the preparation of the dedicated electricals room, installation, switch-over and eventual decommissioning of the old system. Our project managers brought the project in on budget, within time, and without incident.
The UPS units are powered by a battery array which provides the datacenter with 90 minutes of power at the current load level. This time is more than sufficient as it is only required to cover the 7 minutes it takes for the generator to spin up to full capacity. We're also enjoying the excellent record of the Rialto building who haven't had a sustained power outage since 1992. This upgrade completes a significant milestone in our strategic plan for upgrading and expanding this site. We are now preparing a new project to migrate clients from other datacenters and market the site to new clients.
